Yıldız Hamidiye Mosque

The Yıldız Hamidiye Mosque situated in Yıldız neighborhood of Beşiktaş district in Istanbul, Turkey at the European side of Bosphorus.
The structure in Ottoman and neo-gothic style has an octagonal plan. The mosque was repaired in 1993.

Nikogos Balyan was from the distinguished Balyan family, an ethnic-Armenian family of Ottoman imperial architects. Architects from the family built various mosques and churches in İstanbul throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Members of the family served a total of six sultans during the period of the Ottoman architecture’s Westernization. Some of the monuments they have built include Valide Mosque, Dolmabahçe Mosque, Yıldız Palace, the Üsküdar Armenian Gregorian Church and Beyazit Tower.

This is the Yıldız Hamidiye Mosque, built on the orders of Abdülhamid II (1842-1918, reigned 1876-1909). It was constructed in 1884-1886, architect Balyan.

Yıldız (literally “a star” in Turkish) is a neighbourhood located in the Beşiktaş district of Istanbul, Turkey. The neighbourhood comprises some of Istanbul’s well-known historical locations, such as Yıldız Park and Yıldız Palace, the second largest palace in Istanbul.

The area of Yıldız used to be a coniferous forest in Byzantine times. Starting during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, the Ottoman sultans made it their hunting grounds. In the next centuries, it remained as a grove behind the seaside palaces. The neighbourhood began to flourish in the wake of construction of the palace in the 19th century. It took its name from the first pavilion, namely Yıldız Kasrı, commissioned by Selim III in early 19th century.

The area was the administrative center of the Ottoman Empire for the last 30 years, during the era of Abdul Hamid II.

The biggest part of the palace gardens, some old pavilions and the famous porcelain workshops are open to the public in what is now called the Yıldız Park. The well-known pavilion in the complex, the Şale Köşkü or Chalet Pavilion, is accessed through the park.

Today a considerable part of the neighbourhood’s area is occupied by the old palace complex, which contains the main palace buildings, Yıldız Park, Yıldız Mosque and Yıldız Clock Tower as well as Yıldız Technical University.

Hamidiye, adjacent to Yıldız Palace, was built by Abdülhamid II in 1886. The architect was Nikogos Balyan, the chief imperial architect of the time.

Once you pass through the doors leading to the courtyard of the mosque you see two white, marble staircases, which connect you to two different rooms on the second floor, and between them the main door, decorated with beautiful calligraphy.

The stairs on the right lead to the Süfera Odası, a room reserved for ambassadors, with its gilt ceiling, while the stairs to the left lead to the ornately decorated Hünkar Mahfili, the royal booth. To the left of the royal box, there is an elegant, white ceramic stove that remains well-preserved, and to the right there is another booth separated from the rest of the room with a door made mostly of glass. This smaller booth looks out through latticework over the main space of the mosque.

You enter the mosque through two covered rooms, the first smaller and the second larger. These rooms contain lockable shoe boxes.

The Yıldız Hamidiye Mosque, also called the Yıldız Mosque (Turkish: Yıldız Hamidiye Camii, Yıldız Camii), is an Ottoman imperial mosque located in Yıldız neighbourhood of Beşiktaş district in Istanbul, Turkey, on the way to Yıldız Palace. The mosque was commissioned by the Ottoman sultan Abdul Hamid II, and constructed between 1884 and 1886. The mosque was built on a rectangular plan and has one minaret. The architecture of the mosque is a combination of Neo-Gothic style and classical Ottoman motifs.

A bronze colonnade erected by Sultan Abdul Hamid II in Marjeh Square of Damascus, Syria bears a replica statue of the Yıldız Mosque on top.
