Thousands of Shiite Muslims gathered in İstanbul’s Halkalı district on Saturday to mark the day of Ashura and mourn the martyrdom of 72 people, including Husain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala 1,369 years ago.

It must be love …
When I booked another citytrip to Istanbul, my friends asked me: ‘What is it with you and Istanbul?’
At first, I didn’t really know how to answer that question exactly so I started with: it’s its culture, its present and its past, its colors, it’s the people, it’s the food, it’s the atmosphere, it’s the sun shining on the Bosphorus, it’s the moon rising on a clear night, it’s the smell of the spices at the Egyptian Bazaar, it’s simply …. magic. A thousand words wouldn’t have been enough to describe how I feel about Istanbul but there is only one word that is universal and which everybody understands so I finally said: it must be love. I fell in love with the city a few years ago and it was love at first sight.

And neither will the pictures (I think I should apply for a
job at the Istanbul Tourist Information Center ). Continue reading

I already visited Istanbul about 20 years ago but it all really started when I was reading Jason Goodwin’s ‘The Janissary Tree’, a novel about Yashim, a crime-solving eunuch. His description of 1830’s Istanbul was so remarkable and so colorful I just had to see for myself again. And I must admit: getting older DOES effect the memory and I was sure the city had changed a lot over the years.

So there I was, determined to rediscover that fascinating national treasure and step into Yashim’s footsteps as he climbed all the way up from the Bosphorus to the Galata tower.
