    Merhaba;

Neyse uzattim galiba, guzel calismaniz icin tekrar tesekkurler…
    İstanbul’da yasamanin tadini cikarin emi…

    Hi,

I am from Macedonia but I am completely in love with Istanbul. I come as often as I can because it helps me “recharge” my spiritual batery :). Anyway, I spent some days in Capadoccia last month and the Turkish guide told me that in May there is a Tulip festival in Istanbul. I would really want to come for that event and bring my parents as well (my father has more than 2000 tulips in his garden), but I couldn’t find out the exact date of the festival. Would you have any idea? Or maybe you could tell me who would be able to give me an answer. Anyway, thank you for the beautiful photos of my Dream City. Istanbul, I love you.

    All the best

    Mimi

Hello from Ispanya, I’ve discovered your website today, and I like it very much. I’m from Spain, I’ve been in Turkey 5 times, so, I love Istanbul as much as you….I’m lucky, because I have the chance to travel all around Europe and North Africa, and I’ve visit a lot of cities, but Istanbul is my favourite city in the world. I’ll come back there on september. And I’m just counting the days to leave….greetings from Ispanya, Veronica.

I discovered your website while I was searching for some information on the Yeni Camii. I enjoyed visiting your site because it’s obvious that both you and I (and many others) share a common love for the mystic city of istanbul.
I have a website about the city of Istanbul, too.
Actually, my blog is about a little boy who worked in the streets of Istanbul whom I photograph on one trip. Later, I returned to Istanbul to find the little boy and it took me three days to find him. I wrote a poem about the search and that became a blog and a whole lot of creative work on the city of Istanbul. Maybe you would like to visit.

And now that I am far from Istanbul pictures like yours help me remembering the happy moments spent there.
I will go back, soon, and I will never live it again, despite all difficulties, despite the fact i don’t know your language.
Istanbul is the place I wnat to call Home.
Thank you for what you do and thank you for these beautiful pictures.

  • Fredrik // January 12, 2009 at 9:18 am | Reply

    Dear Ozgur,

Let me introduce myself. I’m a historian from the Netherlands. Currently I’m writing a book about the life of Raymond Paul Pierre Westerling, a former Special Forces commander of the Dutch army.

However Raymond Westerling was born in 1919 in Istanbul, where his fathers family already lived for 5 generations. Westerling stayed in Istanbul till 1941 when he moved to England to join the Dutch army fo fight Nazi-Germany. In 1946 he was appointed commander of the Dutch Special Forces in the war against the former Dutch colony of Indonesia. His methods of fighting Indonesian guerillas made him famous in the Netherlands, where many glorified him for his toughness and considered him a national hero, while others condemned his excessive use of violence against indigenous people and saw him as a war criminal.

His Turkish origin got much attention by the Dutch newspapers at that time. They suggested his bravery was a result of it and nicknamed him “the Turk”. Westerling passed away in the Netherlands in 1987. He never saw his family in Istanbul again.

In order to find out more about Westerling’s formative years in Istanbul, I’m attempting to get into contact with his family members and with people who knew Westerling.

So far, only very little is known. Westerling lived with his father Paul, an antique dealer whose family had been living in İstanbul for generations, his mother, Sophia Moutzatzou, and his sister Palmyra in Beyoğlu. The family also owned a summer house in Pendik.

Do you know how I can find Westerling’s family members and people who grew up with them? With your help I maybe will be able to fill this gap in Dutch Turkish historiography. Any information is welcome!

Kind regards and best wishes for 2009,

    Fredrik Willems

Trying to find any information on the Westerling family. My niece’s husband’s father is Johannes Henderikus Westerling(born 1938, Vendum) and his grandparents were Johannes Westerling and Alberdina van Oust. Can you advise what relation Turco Westerling was to this branch of the family? Thank you

      Hi Osi,

hhm, there were two Özbekler Tekkesi (afgan tekkesi) in Istanbul. I dont know Naksibendi relations of tekkes.

      (1)
big and best known building. In Asia side !!
      (in turkish) ”
Üsküdar, Fethipaşa Korusu yanı. Özbekler tekkesi. Ertegün sokak.

      (2) in Europe side !!!
In sultanahmet, there was a Özbekler Tekkesi. It’s difficult to find and to consult a experienced guider of mosque’s care man.
      (in turkish)”
Sokull Mehmet Paşa Camii ‘nin arkasi. Su terazisinin devamında. Özbekler sokak içerisinde. Sormak gerekiyor.

You can write and give to taxi driver “in turkish” part.

Hello, I found your site though Google as it is related to my own travel site. I wanted to ask if you would be interested in a link exchange as I have some high ranking travel blogs many with a PageRank of 3 or more.

I have a list of my sites here: http://www.migranchile.com/mysites.html

I have been swapping links for while now and have found it very beneficial to search engine rankings for everyone. If you are interested just mail me back and I can show you my sites and hopefully give you some links asap.

    Thanks for your time.
    Paul
