a song from “Mozaik”  about Coup years of Turkey  in 80’s.
1981

In resounding heavy footsteps,
The evening comes to town
They go hiding in their homes,
the go in one by one
Locking the world out, locking themselves in
The streets stay in streets,
where they’ve always been

Every night they silently welcome the night
Turning on their TV sets,
the children put out of sight
The morning waits outside
until the break of day
All stired up by the ripples in the air.

They stand  before the camera,
they all stand in a row (*)
Eyes turned down in bitterness,
blindfold untied for the show
Fifteen weary people and three unemployed

Legal cats will roam in the night,
masters of the streets
Behind the doors they live their lifes
in security and peace
Cats’ feet on the garbage cans
declare a holy war
Ther’s a sudden hush,
their eyes turn to the door.

Ny no legal means the morning comes to town
One by one they leave their home
to scatter all around
The woman on tape screams us a song
The streets will go and hide their home.

They stand  before the camera,
they all stand in a row
Eyes turned down in bitterness,
blindfold untied for the show
Fifteen weary people and three unemployed

(*) The refrain talks about the daily TV-news after the Coup. People ware captured and shown in TV.

1981

Akşam ayak sesleriyle iner şehre
Hep birden evlerine kaçışırlar
Kapılar kilitlenir, perdeler çekilir
Sokakta kalır sokaklar

Gece sessizce karşılanır her gece
Televizyon açılır, çocuklar yatırılır
Sabah sabaha kadar sokakta bekler
Tek misafiri tedirginlikler

Dizilmiş dururlar kameranın önünde
Gözlen bağlı değil gözleri yerde
Yorgun onbeş insan ve boştagezer üç kişidir

Yasaksız kediler gezer sokaklarda
Camların ardında güven ve huzur
Devrilen tenekeler birer savaş ilanı
Gözler kapıya döner, susulur

Sabah izinsiz gelir şehre
Birer birer evlerinden dağılırlar
Teypteki kadın bir şarkı söyler
Evlerde kalır sokaklar
Dizilmiş dururlar kameranın önünde
Gözlen bağlı değil gözleri yerde
Yorgun onbeş insan ve boştagezer üç kişidir.

  1. Great line –

    The streets stay in streets,
    where they’ve always been

  2. Hi,

I know your blog and read often.

“In Search of the Little Boy of Istanbul” is good and extreme poetic title

    thanks for your comment

  3. Hello,
I wish there was peace, but there is not peace.
I wish there was dignity and human rights for all people. There is not.
I hope that you go to visit my blog. I use the word “imagine” because I try to imagine a world where there is peace and all that should be. But there is not.
